First Generation
Peter and Heinrich Schneider were brothers, sons of Johann Heinrich Schneider or Snyder of Pennsylvania. Peter Schneider (1744-?), married Elizabeth Mueller or Miller in 1767 in York Moravian Church, York PA. He was in NC by the early 1780s, and moved with his family to New River VA in 1787.
Heinrich Schneider (1754-1794) settled in NC. In 1794 he went to New River to visit his brother Peter, and was drowned on his return journey, trying to ride through a ford on the Little River. He was married to Maria Hartman.
Thanks to Carole Spencer and Vanessa Lasater Argyres for information on these brothers, and to the Hartman family researchers for information on Heinrich's family.
Vanessa mentioned a book about this family: A Historical Account of the Schneider/Snider/Snyder Family of America, by June Shaull Lutz, 1981.
For Heinrich and Maria's children, the Hartman researchers cite records from the Moravian Archives and Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts in Salem, Darrell G. Pritchett's book Some Hartmans of North Carolina, and an article by Hunter James, "Friedberg, The Early Years", in Frances Griffin's series Three Forks of Muddy Creek, volume 3.
