Records of the Yadkin Association - Volume 2 - 1810

Minutes of the Yadkin Association began & held at Cub Creek Meeting House in Wilkes County on the first Saturday in October 1810.

14 Churches being represented. Br. Joseph Murphy preached the Introductory sermon from the 6th Chapter of St. John's gospel 8th (chapter) 50 verse.

The Association being formed proceeded and chose Brethren William Dotson (as) Moderator and Thomas Wright (as) Clerk.

1st - Received a correspondent letter and delegate from the Mountain Association to wit Thomas Douglass, also a letter & delegate Edmund Pace from the Mayo Association.

2nd - A letter from Providence Church praying for redress of grievance was read & on motion it was agreed that Brethren Cunningham, Hampton & Belt be appointed together with the Moderator & Clerk a Committee to arrange the Business of the Association and report on Monday next. Then adjourned till Monday 9. O'clock.

On Sunday Brethren Murphey, Dotson & Douglass preached to the people.

Monday met according to adjournment & after divine Service proceeded to Business

1st - The names of the Delegates being called, the Rules of Decorum was then read.

2nd - The committee reported the Business of the Association.

3rd - Certain queries that had been introduced from the Grassy Nol Church was on motion withdrawn.

Query - From the Flat Rock Church - is faith and repentance conditions of the gospel or fruits of the gospel? Answer: Fruits.

It was then noted that the next Association be held at the Island Ford Meeting House in Surry County on the 1st Saturday in October next.

The committee appointed last Association to look into the distress of Providence Church made report.

Then came under consideration the petition from Providence Church that was laid over for this day. Whereupon it was agreed that the following named Brethren (to wit) Dotson, Wright, Cooker, Angel, Frost, Potts, Belt, Hampton, Cook, Pace, Douglas, Martin & Mastin be appointed to attend at Providence Meeting House on the first Friday in December next to look into the disorder of sd. Church and to act accordingly. Either to pronounce them reclaimed or still in disorder and report to next Association.

Then proceeded and appointed Br. Dotson a Delegate to the Mountain Association & Brethren Murphey & Angle to Mayo Association & Brethren Cooker & Potts to Sandy Creek Association and the Clerk to write the Corresponding letters. Adjourne. (Signed) William Dotson, Md. and W. Wright, Ck.

Records of the Yadkin Association - Volume 2 - 1811

March 1st, 1811

By a special request we John Angel, Henry Hampton, Brumly Cooker, Ebenezor Frost, Thomas Belt, & Thomas Wright met at Br. Frosts in Rowan County & after being seated for Business Sally Ellis one of the Members at Timber Ridge came forward & was restored to union. Also John Meglemre from Providence & made a lengthy acknowledgement of his disorder & the disorder of Providence Church and was restored to union. Also (gave) a voluntary acknowledgement of his disorderly conduct toward Br. Murphey which was satisfactory to us. Signed on behalf of the whole - H. Hampton

Br. Mitchel preached the Introductory sermon from Somons, 3rd Chapter, 26 verse.

Then adjourned until the last Saturday in December at Timber Ridge Meeting House in Rowan County.

On the last Saturday in December met according to adjournment & proceeded to Business & received into union the following Brethren. That is to say Samuel James, James Nolen, William Griffith, Elizabeth James, Elizabeth Riley, Susanna Black, Mary Etichton, Anne Griffith, Sarah Cooker & Mary Cornell. Then Adjourned & signed in behalf of the whole - John Angel.

The delegates being seated in order proceeded & chose Brumly Cooker Moderator & Thomas Wright Clerk.

1st - then received a corresponding letter and delegates from the Mountain Association (to wit) Abram Mitchel & John McBride - also a letter and delegate Edmund Pace from the Mayo Association.

2nd - received a petition from a new Constituted church at Double Creek, Wilkes County, praying admittance into union of the Association which was received.

3rd - on motion it was agreed that Henry Hampton, Ebenzor Frost, & Isaac Wiseman, together with the Moderator & Clerk be appointed a Committee to arrange the Business of the Association and report on Monday next, then adjourned till Monday 9 o'clock.

On Sunday Brethren Murphey, Angle and Cooker preached to the people.

Monday met according to appointment & after devine service proceeded to business.

1st - the names of the delegates being called, the rules of decorum was read.

2nd - on motion the committee appointed to arrange the Business of the Association made report.

3rd - the Committee appointed last year to visit Providence Church made report as follows:

Your committee by leave to report - that pursuant to an Order of last Association we conveyed at Providence Meeting House in Surry County on the first Friday in December, 1810 - for the purpose of looking into the disorder of said Church - and after being situated to the work found them in disorder as reported to the Association in 1809 - and pronounced them as such that is to say a disorderly peoples and out of fellowship - then came forward Sally Douglass, Elizabeth Meglamre & Elizabeth Meglamre, wife of John Meglemre and made an acknowledge & recantation of their disorder & was received into union.

Which report being read, the question was first: Shall this report be couniered (?) with? Which was agreed to in part - that is to say, so far as respects to work done at Providence & Timber Ridge in receiving into union the following Members - to wit - Sally Douglas, Elizabeth Meglemre, Elizabeth Meglemre, wife of John Meglemre, Samuel James, James Nolen, William Griffith, Elizabeth James, Elizabeth Riley, Susanna Black, Mary Etichon, Anne Griffith, Sarah Cooker & Mary Cornell in and that the following Brethren to wit - Cooker, Hampton, Britten, Jas. Holeman, Beeman, Frost, Furches, Buckern, Murphey & Angel or a Majority of them be appointed to attend at Timber Ridge on the Thursday before the 3rd Saturday in November next - in order to look into the abilities & standing of those reclaimed Members formerly of Providence Church and if found able, to constitute them as a Church - if not, to give such directions as they may deem most advisable. Also to here & receive any that may come forward. Who hath heretofore been considered in disorder as Members of sd. Providence Church and that they have until the next Association if necessary to complete the work & report to the same.

4th - Then came forward Peter Eaton & made Application for advice respecting his present stand - as such he is advised to apply to some sister church most convenient & to call on his former Brethren to attend & there sue (?) for fellowship.

5th - It was then voted that the next Association be held at Eatons Meeting House on the 1st Saturday in October next.

6th - On motion it was agreed that Brethren Cunningham & McBride be appointed to attend the Mountain Association and Brittin & Hampton the Mayo & Cooker & Wiseman to Sandy Creek Association and that the Clerk prepare the corresponding letters - then adjourned. Records of the Yadkin Association - Volume 2 - 1812

Minutes of the Yadkin Association held at Eaton's Meeting House in Rowan County on the first Saturday of October 1812 when 14 Churches was represented by letter & Delegates. The Members being seated chose Brethren Brumly Cooker (as) Moderator and Thomas Wright (as) Clerk.

Then received a Corresponding letter from the Mountain Association, Thomas Douglas, Delegate. Also a letter from May & Edmund Pace & William Fletcher'' delegation and a letter from Sandy Creek, Bennett Solloman delegate.

On motion it was agreed that Brethren Mastin, Wiseman, McBride and & Solloman together with the Moderator and Clerk be appointed to arrange the Business of the Association and report on Monday.

It was further agreed that Brethren Campbell & Hampton be appointed a Committee to receive the Churches Bounty.

Then appointed Brethren Douglas, Pace & Solloman to preach on Sunday.

Adjourned until Monday, 9 O'clock.

Monday met according to Adjournment & after divine service proceeded to Business.

1st - The names of the delegates were called and the rules of Decorum read.

2nd - The committee appointed last Association to vien (?) the standing of certain Members formerly of Providence and report as follows:

Your Committee to wit Murphey, Holeman, Beeman, Frost, Angel & Furchuse met according to appointment and proceeded to Business - but not finding abilities for a constitution gave letters of dismission - also restored to fellowship: Nancy Pelly, Nancy Isbel & Elizabeth Brandon - then adjourned til the 25th April at Eatons Meeting House.

At which time the following Brethren met - that is to say - Cooker, Brittin, Buckner, Angel, Furchase, Frost and Holeman met and proceeded to Business.

When John Meglemre came forward and made an acknowledgement of the disorder of Providence in --------------- of Members ------ to gospel order. Signed: James Holeman, Ck.

Which report was read and concurred with.

The committee appointed to arrange the Business of the present Association. Made report.

Query 1 - From Eaton's Church was read & on motion rejected.

On application of Peter Eaton the following named Brethren (to wit) Cooker, Cunningham, Angel, Brettin, Frost & Buckner was appointed to attend at Timber Ridge on the 28th of November to view the standing or abilities of certain Brethren there and to consitiute them if thought necessary.

Also on application of John Meglemre for advice - he was advised to endeavor for a reconciliation with those Brethren that were distressed with him. Then Adjourned & Signed. Thomas Wright, Ck.

Query 2 - is it Expedient for a woman whose husband has left her and taken another & living with her for several years to petition the legel to turn for a divorce. Answer: Not expedient.

Query 3 - Is there any Scriptures or exam file for a Church to deedefy (?) a Majority. Answer: We know of none.

It was then voted that the next Association be held at the Jersey Meeting House in Rowan County on the first Saturday in October next.

It was then agreed that the Brethren Cunningham & Britten be appointed to attend the Mountain Association & L. (?) Cunningham to attend Mayo and that we correspond with Sandy Creek Association by letter.

Minutes of the Yadkin Assocation held at the Jersey Settlement in Rowan County on the first Saturday in October, 1813.

Introductory sermon delivered by Br. James Parsons. The Messengers conveyed & after divine service received & read 11 letter and enrolled the Delegates names.

The Messengers then being called & seated in order proceeded to choose Brumly Cooker (as) Moderator and Thomas Wright (as) Clerk.

Received a newly constituted church by the name of Muddy Creek Church.

Received a corresponding letter from the Mountain Association and Delegate James Person.

Brethren in the Ministry from other Associations invited to take seats.

Henry Hampton to act with the Moderator & Clerk as a Committee to arrange the Business of the Association.

Appointed Ebenezor Frost & William McBride a committee of finance.

Appointed Joseph Murphey, Armstead Lilly, Bennett Sollomon & Richard Cunningham to preach on Sunday.

Adjourned until Monday 9 O'clock.

Monday met according to Adjournment. The Committee appointed to arrange the Business of the reported and was discharged.

Reviewed several copies of the Minutes of the Baptist General Minutes of Correspondance for which recorded our thanks.

Agreeable to a petition from Muddy Creek Church. Brethren Murphey, Cooker & Angel are appointed to attend said Church as a presbatorey (?) for the purpose of ordaining of Church officers in the aforesaid Church.

On request of Eaton's Church it was agreed that a yearly, General Meeting be appointed in the Bounds of the Association on the first Saturday in August, in every year & to continue three days each. And that it be considered as a Communion season and the church where the meeting may be held to prepare the elements, and that the Association shall every year appoint the place where said meeting shall be held.

On motion it was agreed that this Association take under consideration whether we shall fall in with the measures of the Baptist General Meeting of Correspondence. Referred to next Association.

Appointed Brethren James Persons, William Brittin, Henry Hampton, Thos. Belt & Thomas Wright or a majority of them to attend with John Meglemre at such time & place as they may appoint in order to assist them in obtaining a reconciliation with those brethren that are distressed with him.

Appointed Br. Joseph Murphey & Richard Cunningham to the Mayo Association & Br. Angel & Cunningham to the Mountain & Br. Cooker to Sandy Creek & Br. Tilly to write the corresponding letter to Sandy Creek.

Our next Association to be held at New Hope on the first Saturday in October next & Brother Murphey & in case of failure Br. Cunningham to preach the Introductory sermon - and the yearly General Meeting to be held at the Flat Rock. Adjourned. Brum. Cooker, Modo. and Tho. Wright, Ck.

Minutes of the Yadkin Association began & held at New Hope Meeting House the 1st Saturday in October, 1814.

The Introductory sermon delivered by Br. Cunningham from Esshesians 2nd Chapter, & 19th verse. Letters from 14 churches were handed in as follows.

The Delegates being seated in order proceeded and chose Richard Cunningham (as) Moderator and Thomas Wright (as) Clerk.

Then received a corresponding letter from the Mountain Association and their Messenger James Persons - also a copy of their Minutes for which the tanks of this Association is recorded.

Also a corresponding letter & Delegate Thomas Elephant from the Mayo Association and John Wilson a Messenger from Sandy Creek Association.

On motion it was agreed that Brethren Cooker, Britten and Wiseman together with the Moderator & Clerk be appointed a Committee to arrange the business of the Association and report on Monday.

Then proceeded and appointed Brethren Wiseman and Campbell a Committee of Finance.

It was then voted that Brethren Cunningham, Angel and Persons should preach on Sunday.

Then Adjourned until 9 O'clock on Monday.

Monday met according to adjournment and after divine service proceeded to Business.

1st - The reference from last Association whether we shall join in with or adopt the Measures of the Baptist General Meeting of Correspondence was taken up and discussed. Whereupon it was agreed that Brethren Cunningham & Brettin be appointed to attend for the purpose of visiting that body and collect information respecting that Institution and report to next Association.

2nd - The committee appointed last Association to assist John Meglemre in obtaining a reconciliation with his distressed Brethren. Made report and was discharged.

3rd - The committee appointed to arrange the business of the Association. Made report and was discharged from that duty.

4th - Query from New Hope Church - What is the work of a deacon in his public office? Answer: We think the work and duty of a deacon is to attend on the administration of the ordinance of the Lords Supper - to take or ? of the wants of their Ministers & poor Brethren and make it known to the Church.

5th - A petition from Cub Creek Church praying advice respecting their present standing was read and the following advice given. That is to say - it is advised that they stand as they are until the next Association and do recommend as many of the Brethren in the Ministry to visit them as often as convenient.

6th - A Request for advice from Brother Eaton, respecting his Ministereal Function, came under consideration and the Brother advised to be under the direction of his Church in that cause.

7th - On Motion it was agreed that the different churches be instructed to signify in their letter to the next Association whether they will have their Minutes printed or not.

8th - On Motion it was agreed that John Meglemre be advised to visit Brethren Murphey, Martin, Cunningham & Masten at Brier Creek Meeting House on the 5th Saturday Instant. And that Brethren Angel, Brettin, and Wright do attend at the time and place above said to hear the charges exhibited and the acknowledgements made & to judge of the matter and report to the next Association and that said Brethren & Melgemre attend Br. Murphy on the 2nd Saturday in Jan. on the same Petition.

9th - It was then agreed that the following Brethren be appointed delegates to the following Associations: Joshua Carter to Mayo. Brettin & Cunningham to the Mountain Association - and that we correspond by letter to Sandy Creek Association & Br. Wiseman to write & convey the letters and the Clerk to prepare a letter to the Gen. Meeting of Correspondence.

10th - It was then agreed that the next Association be held at Howel's Meeting House in Rowan County on the Friday before the 1st Saturday in October next. And the Gen. Meeting at Roaring River on the first Saturday in August next and (that) Br. Angle preach the Introductory sermon in case of failure, Br. Cunningham. (Signed) R. Cunningham, Md. And T. Saturday met according to appointment & after divine service proceeded to Business.

1st - Received 2 newly constituted churches by the names of Zion Hill and Bethel.

2nd - The rules of decorum was read.

3rd - The committee appointed to arrange the Business of the Association made (the) report and was discharged.

4th - Query - What shall be done with a Member that neglects to attend church meeting and after being admonished still neglects to attend? Answer: We advise a Church in such a case to use all possible means to bring such a Member to sense of duty but if discipline must be used for it to be done tenderly.

5th - Query (2nd) - If a member is taken under dealings and the Church considers him in a wrong is it gospel order to restore such Member to their proper standing in the Church without some acknowledgements or satisfaction to the grieved? Answer: Was not gospel order.

6th - Having not obtained satisfactory information from the Churches on the subject of printing the Minutes of the Association it is again advised that the churches signify in their next letters their yea or nay on that subject.

7th - Called on the Brethren appointed to attend the General Meeting of Correspondence - who reported that they had failed to comply with that duty and on motion was excused.

8th - Appointed Brethren Angel & Cunningham to visit the next general meeting of Correspondence and collect information respecting that institution and report to next Association and the Clerk to prepare these letter(s).

9th - Called on the Brethren who were appointed to attend with John Meglemre for the purpose of obtaining fellowship with certain Brethren who was distressed with him who reported they had neglected to attend and on motion was excused.

10th - Called on the Brethren who was appointed to correspond with the different Associations. Br. Carter responded that they had failed in the discharge of his duty and was excused.

11th - Our next Association to be head at Brier Creek in Wilkes County on the first Saturday in October next.

12th - Agreed that Br. Brettin be appointed to preach the Introductory sermon & in case of failure Br. Cooker.

On motion agreed that a select Committee be appointed to take in consideration & examining the first & second Annual Reports of the Baptist Board of Foreign Missions together with such letters and documents as may be ordered from the agent of that Board the Rev. Luther Rice and to report on Monday the expediency or inexpediency of keeping up a correspondance with said Board and that Benjamin Martin, E. Frost, W. Petty and T. Wright compose that Committe

Adjourned till Monday 9 O'clock.

On Sunday the Brethren appointed to preach fulfilled their appointment and had the pleasure of addressing a large and attentive congregation and there were hopeful appearances of the divine blessing Mending their labours. Bro. Cooker concluded the public services of the day by a warm and affectionate discourse.

Monday met according to appointment and after divine service proceeded to business.

Received a Corresponding letter & delegate from the Mountain Association.

On motion the Clerk was ordered to read the rules of decorum.

The Committee appointed to arrange the business of the Association, made report and were discharged.

Query - Is it right for a member to go to hear an excommunicated person preach or for a Church to open her doors for him to preach in her Meeting House. Answer: In the negative.

Query - Is it gospel order to ordain elders in a Church that do not labour in word and doctrine? If the answer is yea, what is their work and qualification? Answer: We think it gospel order to ordain elders in a Church provided they are exemplary in deportment & gifted in Church government and discipline.

Agreed that the minutes of this Association in future be printed and that the Clerk superintend the printing & have 200 copies for the present year and that Brethren Cunningham & Brittin write a circular letter and choose the subject.

Appointed Brethren Dotson & Angel to visit the Salem Church and to inquire the cause why she fails to be represented in the Association.

Brethren appointed Correspondents last year called on to report whether they had discharged that duty. Brother Cunningham reported he failed, gave reasons why he could not attend, and was excused.

The Committee appointed on the subject of Corresponding with the Board of Foreign Missions reported that they have had the subject referred to them under consideration and do recommend that this Association in future receive the communications of said Board. And that a corresponding secretary be appointed for that purpose which was concurred with and Brother Thomas Wright appointed Secretary.

Agreed that next Association be held at Zoin Hill in Wilkes County on the first Saturday in October next and Brother Cunningham to preach the introductory sermon & in case of failure Brother Angel and the Churches are requested to insert in their letters the number of Members.

Appointed Brethren Richard Cunningham, John Angel and William Brettin to preach on Sunday.

Appointed Brethren Richard Cunningham, Isaac Wiseman & Thomas Wright, with the Moderator and Clerk for Committee to arrange the business of the Association.

Appointed brethren Isaac Wiseman & Hardy Wells a Committee of Finance.

Brother Wright handed in a circular letter, addressed to the Association from the Board of Foreign Missions which was read. Adjourned til Monday, 9 O'clock.

On Sunday the brethren appointed to preach fulfilled their station before a large & attentive congregation, with warm and affectionate discourses.

Monday met according to appointment & after divine service proceeded to Business.

On Motion the Clerk was ordered to read the rules of decorum.

The Committee appointed to arrange the business of the Association made (the) report and was discharged.

Brethren appointed Correspondants last year were called on to report whether they had discharged that duty, who reported that they had failed.

Brethren appointed last year to visit the Salem Curch also reported they had failed. Whereupon it was agreed that brother J. Angel & Brother William Dotson, Jr. be appointed to visit said church & inquire into their standing & report to next Association.

Appointed Brethren Cooker & Pickle to visit Muddy Creek Church & inquire the cause why she fails to be represented in the Association.

Agreed that the next Association be held at Bethel Meeting House in Wilkes County on the first Saturday in October next and brother William Dotson, Sen., to preach the Introductory sermon and in case of failure, Bro. John Angel.

Then appointed Brethren Angel, Pickle, Masten, Cooker, Britten & Quellum to attend the Mountain Association & Woody and Brog. (?) to the Mayo & Brother Wright to prepare the Corresponding letters.

Ordered that Brother Wright prepare the Minutes of this Association for the (?) and that he have 190 copies printed and when done, ……..the Churches and Associations as he may think proper.

Agreed that the Mountain & Mayo Associations be presented with 15 copies of the Minutes of last year.

On motion it was agreed that Brethren Dotson & Wright prepare a circular letter to be amended (?) to the Minutes of this Association.

Agreed to the report of Brother Wright. It appears there is a surplus of $4.50 in his hands after paying for printing the Minutes of last year. It further appears that the Committee of Finance reported nine dollars and 40 cents making in all $13.96 to be disposed of as the Association shall desire.

Brother Wright who was appointed Corresponding Secretary to the Board of Foreign Missions reported that he had not as yet recd. the general report of said Board tho he was informed by letter they had been sent on. Adjourned. Brumley Cocker, M and William Johnston, C.

Minutes of the Yadkin Association held at Bethel Meeting house in Wilkes County on the first Saturday in October, 1818.

The Introductory sermon was delivered by Brother William Dotson from Matthew, 16th Chapter, 1st verse.

Sunday the Brethren appointed to preach fulfilled their appointment and had the pleasure of addressing a very orderly and crowded congregation.

Monday met according to appointment and after divine service proceeded to business.

On motion the Clerk was order to read the Rules of Decorum.

On motion by Br. Dotson, brother Wright was called upon to report whether he had received any communication from the board of foreign Missions, who reported he had received 20 copies of the 4th annual report of that Board together with a circular letter addresed to this association, also he had received a circular letter from the Kentucky Baptist mission society addressed to this association on the subject of Indian reform which being said were bother refered to a select committee consisting of Brethren Dotson, Brethren Angle, Masten and Wright to take the subjects therein contained under consideration and report to next association.

The brethern appointed to visit the Salem Church called on to report from which it appears she had found another association.

The committee appointed to arrange the busines of the association made report & were discharged.

Brethren appointed to visit Muddy Creek Church reported they had discharged that duty.

Brethren appointed to correspond with other associations last year reported they had in fact discharged that duty.
