Eschenbach Family

First Generation

Andreas Eschenbach was a shoemaker from Naumberg, Germany, who became a Moravian minister. He was chosen by Zinzendorf to come to America in 1740 as a German-speaking preacher who could aid the missionary efforts of the newly organized Moravian community in Bethlehem PA, and he arrived in September of that year on the Friendship. For a few years he had great success. Eventually however he had serious disagreements with some members of the church leadership, and he retired to a farm in Northampton Co. PA, where he died in 1763. He married twice, first to Catharina Mintz, daughter of Benedict Mintz (Müntz) of Falkner's Swamp (New Hanover) PA, who died in 1747, and second to Anna Maria Bossert (1729-1797), who survived him.

Johanna Elizabeth Eschenbach (1744-1803) m. Charles Holder (1744-1808)
Andreas Eschenbach (ca. 1747-?) (possibly the oldest child of the second marriage rather than Catharina's?)

Estate records indicate that John and Elisabeth were both over 14 at the time of their father's death in 1763. We know nothing further of John. By 1770, Elisabeth was married to Conrad Omensetter or Umensetter of Colebrookdale PA.

Rebecca was under 14 in 1763, but by 1770 was married, suggesting that she was probably born about 1749-1752.

The sequence in which the names are listed in the estate papers suggest Anna was the next child, hence born by 1754 at the latest.

David and Maria are both buried at Bethlehem Moravian, and their dates are from the burial records published in the Pennsylvania German Society Proceedings, volume 21. Maria's birthdate isn't given; she is listed as the widow Maria Fulton, maiden name Eschenbach, age 64 at the time of her death in 1818. This is inconsistent with the estate papers that list Mary Eschenbach under age 14 in 1763 and the ward of Matthias Roth of Colebrookdale as late as 1770. We think therefore that she was most likely born about 1757. The burial record states that she married four times and had five children.
