Andrew Howenstine Family

Andrew Howenstine was born in Pennsylvania in 1838. In 1861 Andrew enlisted as a Private, Company B, 16th Infantry Reg., Ohio (Union). In October of the same year, he enlisted as Lt. 2nd Class, Company I, 65th Infantry, Ohio. In 1862 Andrew was transferred from Co. I to Co., B and promoted to full Leiutenant 1st Class in August. In March of 1862 he was transferred from Co. B. to Co. H and promoted to Full Captain in March of 1863. Andrew was wounded in his right lung at Spring Hill, TN on Nov 29, 1864. On March 10, 1865 he received a disability discharge, Co., H, 65 Infantry, Ohio. In March of 1865 he married Margaret Andrews who was born about 1844, daughter of Thomas Andrews, Ashland County, Ohio. From census records we know that Andrew and Margaret moved to Illinois where their first three children were born. Their daughter, Susan J., was born in Kansas in 1880. Andrew's name is among others in the 1880 Federal Census, Rossville, Shawnee, Kansas. In that same census, Andrew states both of his parents were born in Pennsylvania, as were Margaret's. In 1883 his name is found on the List of Pensioners on the Roll in Wabaunsee Co., KS. Andrew Howenstine died in 1897 and is buried in the Highland Cemetery, Comanche, OK. In 1899 Margaret Howenstine filed papers for his penision.
