Johannes Schaffner (1773-1854) came to North Carolina on Christmas Eve, 1818, from Neuwied, Germany, having arrived in Baltimore on November 28 on the ship Plato, and have walked from there to Salem. In 1820 he bought the farm belonging to Anna Catharina Fiscus, widow of Jacob Bonn, who was moving with her children and grandchildren to "the western country" (Indiana). The next year he sold this land, however, and moved to Bethania. In 1820 he married Catharina Ranke (1780-1873), widow of George Petrus Hauser.
In November 1827 his nephew Heinrich or Henry Schaffner (1798-1877) came from Neuwied, to take charge of the pottery, although he admitted in a letter written from Germany that he was not yet proficient in work on the potter's wheel. He must have succeeded, however, as he is listed in subsequent census records as a potter. Sometime prior to 1836 he married Elizabeth Levina Hauser (1814-1841), daughter of George Petrus Hauser and Catharina Ranke. In 1842 he married Emilie Charlotte Meinung (1814-1888)
