Peterson Family

First Generation

Carsten or Karsten Petersen was born in 1776 in Wiehekrug, Schleswig-Holstein, which at the time was in Denmark. This town is near Flensborg, which is on the present-day German-Danish border. He arrived in Salem in 1806, where he began work immediately as a cabinet-maker. In 1816 he married Anna or Agnes Susanna Praezel (1787-1856), daughter of Gottfried Praezel and Maria Elisabeth Engel. Karsten Petersen died in 1857 and is buried in Salem.

Second Generation

Children of Karsten Petersen and Susanna Praezel
William Praezel Peterson (1817-1898) m. Paulina Delphina Stoltz (1836-1876), d/o Johann Jacob Stoltz and Maria "Polly" Geiger.
Maria Theresa Peterson (1820-1902) did not marry
*Henrietta Louise Peterson (1823-1847) m. Rev. Johann Adam Friebele
Caroline Emilie Peterson (1825-1826)
James Edward Peterson (1827-1906) m. Martha Virginia Vogler (1836-1907), d/o Nathaniel Vogler and Mary Fishel.

*Johann Adam Friebele was a Moravian missionary to Jamaica. Henrietta went with him to Jamaica after their marriage, but died only four years later. They had two children there, William Henry (1845-1865) and Henrietta Sara Elizabeth (1847-1865; died in Salem). In 1850, William and Sarah E. "Frubily", ages 5 and 3, are living with Karsten and Susan Peterson.

Third Generation

Children of William Praezel Peterson and Paulina Stoltz
William Jacob Peterson (1863-1916) m. Fayetta McMullen
Samuel E. Peterson (1869-1946) m. Adelaide Longworth (1869-1953)

Children of James Edward Peterson and Martha Vogler
Nathaniel Vogler Peterson (1869-1938) m. Jessie Aitken (1876-1937)
Mary Agnes "Mamie" Peterson (1870-1942) m. Charles Thomas Ball (1866-1942)
James Edward Peterson (1872-1947) m. Jettye Ann Hendrix (1879-1946)
Henrietta Caroline Peterson (1874-1909) did not marry
Henry "Harry" W. Peterson (1874-1942) m. Bertha Josephine Hall (1884-1953), d/o James E. Hall and Martha Johnson

Harry and Henrietta Peterson are both buried at Salem Moravian, but the Forsyth Co. cemetery records book gives conflicting birthdates for them. Assuming they were twins, were they born August 20 or October 20, 1874?
