Hein/Hine Family

First Generation

Johann Jacob Hein, was born in 1713 in Schonbach, Hessen-Nassau, Germany, son of Johann Jost and Anna Elspeth Hein. Johann Jacob's first wife was Anna Catharina Schober, who died in 1749 in Germany. In 1752 he married Anna Margaretha Gabriel (1735-1777), with whom he immigrated to America in October 1753 on the ship Elizabeth. They landed at the St. George's River, settling in Broad Bay, Maine, and then to NC around 1770. Johann Jacob Hein died in 1795 and is buried at Friedland Moravian.
The family in the Forsyth County NC area changed the spelling to HINE in the 19th century. We have arbitrarily changed it at the fifth generation on this web page.

There is some confusion about Susannah - some sources list the Susannah Hein who married John Sanders as the daughter of Jacob William Hein instead. Previously we listed the marriage that way, but our feeling now is that John Hein seems a more likely father. Does anyone have a definitive answer?

*The reported birthdates for Catharina and Johann are in conflict. Does anyone have unequivocal information based on baptismal records or a Moravian memoir for either of them?
